Foundation and Early Years
The club was founded in response to the merger of Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain, two existing football clubs in Paris. The new club was named Paris Saint-Germain, and it began playing in the French Second Division.
PSG's early years were marked by ups and downs, with the club moving between the top two divisions of French football. However, in 1986, the club was purchased by Canal+ and began to invest heavily in players and facilities.
The First Trophy
This investment paid off, as PSG won its first major trophy, the Coupe de France, in 1982, and its first league title, the Ligue 1, in 1986. The team that won the league title in 1986, which included players such as Safet Susic and Dominique Rocheteau, is still remembered as one of the most exciting and talented teams in the history of the club. Despite this early success, PSG struggled to establish itself as a consistent force in French football in the years that followed. The club changed ownership several times and went through several coaches and players.
Qatar Sports Investments
It was not until the arrival of Qatar Sports Investments as the majority shareholder in 2011 that PSG began to establish itself as a dominant force in French and European football once again. The new ownership brought significant investment to the club, allowing it to sign some of the best players in the world.
